We stand at the finish of Tatra Road Race in Zakopane. I watch the brand new Canyon Endurace SLX, Panda turns around the circle of the competition, changing impulsively in the Aeroada SLX. No wonder, everyone sits for the first time on a bike with electrics (Dura Ace Di2) behaves as if it touches a new iPhone. He clicks, clicks, switches and does things just to do it. It causes unreasonable joy - you press the button lightly, you hear "bzzzz" and immediately you ride on another gear. It is a pity that you can not upload your own mp3 to such a button. It would be a hit: you're going in the peloton and after throwing the count you hear "kowabunga!", Drop down and hear the disappointed crowd: "buuuu", alternatively put in the top and the chain at the same time jumps from 23 to 11, shouting "Leeroy Jenkins! !! "(greetings to all who have understood: get a life). So Panda rides in circles, passing through the finish several times, making him probably the only person without a grimace of pain in the place, each time receiving a cold Lech Free from polite hostesses, which he then tries inaccurately to turn. Then! She comes up with the classic Masters from the category M40 - one of those who look at you in contempt when you buy a ham for 20 PLN / kg, because he buys for 16.50, and this one is tastier (I have no idea how much it costs ham). In any case, he approaches Panda, looking past her bike with the eyes of Mirek the trader who is looking for scratches on the body, to start price negotiations and asks his favorite cycling question
– Dear bicycle?
– Some PLN 27,000 - That's the answer he was waiting for. Exposure to a shot that will certainly be used.
– This does not translate into results - he casts with contempt and goes away comforted by his retort.
Expensive bikes are a source of envy among many people. It is not different with Canyonami, despite the opinion of "economically sound equipment".
Canyon - what is it?
Canyon is a German company known mainly for making very good and leading bikes in the price / quality category. Which is a bit sad, because you're buying a bike for a dozen or so tens of thousands, thinking that it is affordable. There are no great stories, the legend of cycling did not go on canyon, it's hard to make an element of "spiritualization" for products from Koblenz.
In their stable we find 3 typical road machines. I was lucky to check each one of them:
Aeroad: for people who like
clasp quickly ride flat
Ultimate: for people who like
deny quickly ride in the mountains
Endurance: for people who like to ride
Of course, each of them can be won in each category, but let's be honest - a bike for 30,000 is usually bought for two reasons: to look good or to drive in the conditions it was created for.
I will not write about technical parameters, stiffnesses bigger by several percent in new models and other things that I have to believe in advertising leaflets. I can not measure it, it does not matter much to me. Anyway, do you imagine that I could write that Ultimate, on which Nairo wins races, is too stiff or not fast enough for me?
Canyon Endurace CF SLX
Specifically: ENDURACE CF SLX 8.0 - catalog price: PLN 16599, which is the poorest version as it is. From a distance, it's easy to confuse it with Ultimate. Plus, I'm the first person in Poland who can write how to ride on it. On the Ultegra, with discs, without pedals, apparently around 7.5 kg
Endurace is a funny bike, because I get on him, I do about 2 kilometers and I already know that he will not be the successor to my road - he can do for me at most for the 3rd bike (after the starter and cross-country). Why? The answer is very simple: I get on it and feel like on the cross. The tires are 28mm, although they look at least 30mm (and the frame holds up to 33mm) - Continentale Grand Prix 4000S II - the length of the name is proportional to the quality. If you ask about what tires to buy on the Internet, the answer will be 86%. Their weight (70g more than 25mm) is apparently the only disadvantage - they are as much racing as those thinner ones. I also move the dials to the apartement at the other end of the city and nothing in my views changes.
Bicycles sleep next to us, at your fingertips from the bed - let's face it, let's be honest, how we borrowed equipment for almost 50,000, it may be a problem to go on holiday. They look beautiful - simple, neat, elegant and some other synonyms. Classic German design - the only problem is that I do not have any clothes that match the red-orange color.
The next day, in spite of flying kilometers, I still do not get the feeling that I'm driving on the cross. This results in the fact that several times I turn in a road that I definitely should not drive on a road bike. It is harder than on CX, but easier than usual. Then I remember that this is not a gravel and I am returning to the roads on which this bike was created. One thing is troubling me, I'm sitting comfortably, my legs are waving well - the position is not particularly demanding - I am a tourist, yet Garmin shows normal speed, such as on the road. This bike is not slower than other highways: just by getting on it you do not have the feeling that you have to "zapier". I like it, so this bike will not be my choice. A week later, driving long hours in rain on the Norwegian hills, I come to the conclusion that I would like to come back to him. For this was created: tourism, long rides, gran fondo, ultra ... however, I would like it as a backup.
Anyone who sits on this bike for the first time checks if there is a slip on the back. It's because of a cushioned seatpost - a cool patent, but it requires a bit of a habit - not everyone will like it. I would like to ride, but I do not have to race for 100km. The bike has one more controversial feature:
Shields that cut meat, tear the muscles and burn bones
"Awesome crashes will arise through the discs. Guests who put on such brakes will gain a big advantage on wet asphalt. The v-brakes we use now are doing great, but on a wet road the wheel has to make 2-3 turns to dry the rim. Everyone knows it and they stop it sooner. The disks will wait until the last moment, those behind you will not be able to stop and a problem will arise. The other thing is that I would rather not meet in an accident with a piece of metal heated almost to red. I do not like it, I know that there are more such voices, but the opinion of the equipment manufacturers is more important. Until someone gets seriously hurt. Unfortunately."

What am I going to do? Before you talk about shields on the road, check how they work instead of repeating opinions from the internet or "I think that". Preferably in hard, mountainous terrain or bad weather.
Mr. Bartosz certainly knows from me 100 times more about driving in the peloton ... only that he speaks about professionals. Whoever ever traveled with the mill knows that they are practicing another sport. By saying "shields this evil" it is about "shields in the professional peloton". I do not know about you, I rarely drive in a dense peloton on downhills where the shields are warming up. Much more often I meet people who lack the brake, and the facts are irrefutable: disc brakes inhibit better. <- a dot of hatred. You can say that you do not. You can throw in evidence that the tire is so narrow that it does not matter. Opinions that yours are enough. I know my tatras after wet rallying: brakes much better. I'm not a miller, I can not overcome serpents smoothly - I need these shields more than they do.
Sticking to technologically inferior traditions is similar to listening to MP3 mp3 stones, using cables instead of 3 × 10 cables and drives instead of 1 × 12. He has supporters, but we will not stop the progress and we have to accept the fact that the shields will be on the roads and it is a matter of time (Canyon Aeroad CF SLX Disc and Canyon Ultimate CF SLX Disc).
From Gliczarowa (steep as always, slippery as never before) I drive down a lot before the Panda, who normally defeats me at the rides, going backwards. She's on high-end cones, I'm on hydraulic disks. The conclusion is simple: the worse it gets, the more shields are needed.
Disadvantages: the Ultegra hydraulic door handles are too big for me. I do not belong to the low ones, so I do not know how people with smaller hands will deal with them. Self-braking also requires some habits. I would not dare to ride Ronda Babka in the first two weeks of using it. Probably we would all die then. The door handles are pressed more easily and they brake harder. In an emergency situation and a knee-jerk left, I would probably fly over 20 meters ahead of me.
Summary: I will buy Endurace as a smart driver and instead of racing in short races, I will ride only on 130km + in the mountains. Possibly, if I find a place for 4 of my bikes in the apartment.
Canyon Aeroad CF SLX
Panda goes to Aeroada, he is the worst of all three models: as a gift - a surprise it would be my last choice for her. Asked, however, which she would like to answer clearly: Aeroada. This is a bike to race and win. For those who prefer the speed of convenience, counting KOMs on the hills instead of taking pictures, stopping before the pedestrian crossing only to start from it, generating 1,600 watts. Why, then, his? Because it is beautiful and elegant.
I sincerely sympathize with everyone who must write a sensible review of this bike, because I admit that I do not know what I could fault. The unconscious Panda does not have this problem. He sits down and finds that quite the opposite of the hydraulic Ultegra, her door handles are too small and he holds them badly. Let me just remind you that this is the latest Dura Ace Di2 - accessories for less than PLN 10,000. Unconsciousness is sometimes a blessing ...
Aeroad in a black mat is like the AUDI RS6. From a distance, you see a combi, very nice, but in total a car like a car. If you do not know about cars, then you think one of many. Only when it starts to accelerate and you notice how it disappears on the horizon, leaving behind only the sound of a 500-horsepower engine, you notice that something was wrong here. This bike does not shout that it is the fastest or that it is the most expensive. It's such an elegant suit that will not grow old - without fancy patches, but perfectly tailored from the finest materials. Who knows what he is, he knows.
As for the operation of Dura Ace Di2, it is very simple. The button is pressed - the derailleur changes, the button is held down - it changes several times. If someone wants it differently, he can reprogram himself. Is it better than half the cheaper Ultegra? No, from my point of view, it is exactly the same. Only the weight is reduced by about 400g. Of course, the look is a bit better. It seems to me at least - the question is if I could swap names and make a blind attempt, I would still think like that.
Bajerem are for this additional "pips"To change gears in the lower grip. Such as in Camp, only lower - they stick out somewhere in the middle of bending the steering wheel. Anyone who thinks that this is a gadget only useful to Sagan for the total time of 7 seconds of the race is wrong. This is another element that improves our safety at descents - changing gear becomes faster and more convenient. "Dzynks " Sometimes, however, it annoys a little, because it protrudes somehow between the wrapper, so a man out of boredom entertains him by changing the derailleur in the hole ... but it's probably only me.
All bikes we drive are equipped with an integrated Canyon cockpit with an aerodynamic steering wheel. The first thought is: "where am I going to put in Garmin ?!". And in fact - you can not do it, you need a special attachment, which we tighten from below. The next thoughts are different: from whether it will be convenient to "o, it will be good for your nails!". It can also perfectly function as a stand for a Starbucks cup. The steering wheel is great, but traditionalists will not like it. From what I remember last year, even Nairo chose the usual, rounded. It motivated it probably with convenience or habit - I'm sure I'm not. It would be easier for me to remember if he could speak English. Above all, however .... it looks deadly and wise scientists who had to prove in the laboratory that it was, they did it. Even better is the wrapper (Canyon Ergospeed Gel), which even sticks to the hands and will be the favorite among the potential successors of my Fizik.
To sum up: The bike, as uncompromising equipment, is aimed at racial chasers. By its appearance, unfortunately, it also attracts ordinary amateurs - such as us. The worst thing is that we are also very good at it. Again, I sound like a man-advertisement ;-( I even looked for suggestions on the Internet, what I could find fault with, but by the average rating ranging between 9 and 10 by 10, I lost hope.
Canyon Ultimate CF SLX

Canyon Ultimate is a bike ;-) If you were in Sèvres there was something like a bike template that Ultimate would stand there. Visually, if it was not for the above-mentioned aero steering wheel, it would not stand out from the crowd like anything. It is a machine with no flaws, taken straight from the Great Tour, on which an amateur can ride without a problem. Such a typical "all-rounder" at an affordable price. Okay, I exaggerated. Of course, I wanted an affordable price for such equipment.
Ultimate has one major drawback for me: a minimum of a few thousand hałmaczów we buy a bike that is just the perfect bike. There is nothing that technically worse Italian bikes. There is no feeling that accompanies looking at Aeroad. In my opinion, this is equipment for people who treat the bike only as a means to the goal.
At the end, the most important question remains: which model would I choose for myself.
The answer, it would seem, can only be one: Ultimate. The most universal, the least surprised, fits the preferences for my driving, both amateur-racing and sometimes more tourist-like. Disgustingly light (frame is about 760g) and budgeted. I run long routes rarely enough that I would not use the full potential of Endurance - I do not mind suffering on them ;-)
To my own surprise, if the choice falls on Canyon, it will be Aeroad. Both for me and for Panda. None of us will probably benefit enough from "aero benefits", but it is this bike, despite its simplicity, that makes the belly appear in the butterflies. Not only from driving, but also, and maybe above all, from looking at him.
