(I've asked the Sony RX0 for tests from the person in charge of the series cyclists. It is used for shots where ordinary equipment would be too large).
Photography is my passion - it is the perfect addition to cycling. I can not imagine one without the other. In the tides of boredom, I watch films about how to take pictures and make films, about technological novelties, equipment comparisons, composition courses, coloring, processing and a thousand other things. I still can not do anything about it, but I adhere to the principle that there is no such thing as bad pictures. Just as there is no such thing as bad art. Well, maybe I exaggerate a bit, but if someone is working on something, trying to, doing a product that he likes, why would it be less art than something else that pleases a larger or smaller number of people. We live in beautiful times. The times when hardware deficiencies are probably the smallest problem of all. The choice of equipment is now so large, and its capabilities so huge that cool things can be done for just a thing.
We will leave it, of course, to others. Why make cool things cheap, if you can do the average costly? This time, we will focus, as usual, on things that are very expensive and potentially very unnecessary. I like it the most. A Sony RX0 camera in front of you!
Sony RX0? What is it towards% # $ !?
The first point, the most important one - what is the Sony RX0? It is obscenely (at first glance) a webcam, the size of GoPro. The desire to compare is obvious, but apart from size and shape, these devices have nothing to do with each other. Maybe it's just that they both take pictures and movies ... but more movies. Fortunately, completely different.
The Internet in its few reviews is consistent. The Sony RX0 is great, but it needs absolutely nothing. It's a camera for professionals who will use it for applications that we have not come up with yet. There is a PRO that does not even record in 4k without external devices. And now I'm entering. Always, when on the Internet someone asks a question: what is it for whom, I go in and start wondering! I find application and translate it forcefully, so that at the end of the test I have to set a notification on Allegro, which will inform me when the item appears on the auction.
This is an extremely subjective test / review. Sony RX0 is a camera, I do not need cameras. I will approach her as a compact camera. Because currently small cameras are of no interest, 21st century is a video age. I regret, but I will not overcome this.
Looking at the specification, it seems that I've come to exactly what I've dreamed about for a long time. I do not remember how many times I mentioned that I would like to see such a camera on the market - small and good. Now is the chance.
Fragment for nerds, written in lamery
Let's look at the specification. A trained eye, the first thing that catches the eye is a 1 inch matrix. Exactly the same as probably and objectively the best compact on the market and at the same time the most desirable by riders - Sony RX100. Menus and settings are also similar. Yes, in the webcam that fits in the pocket, we can control the shutter, shutter, ISO, click RAWy, record in S-Log, manually control the focus, connect the external microphone and do a lot of other things that we will not do on the bike. All this is available from the menu level, which in the compact was probably comfortable, but limited to a few control buttons, a bit difficult. Or maybe it's just accustomed to my camera, in which all the knobs are on top (which makes them often twist themselves when removing them from the pocket).
The most important things here are two things - first of all: a fairly narrow angle of view, which is certainly not a sports camera. Secondly, there is no stabilization, so you can almost forget to record from the hand. Therefore, the video is completely abandoned in this text.
I wrote an entry like this one: What to take pictures on a bike? Time flies, tools and opportunities change, but:
In a nutshell - I keep sticking to the version that the optimal solution (universal for everyone) is Gopro and a decent telephone. Years are flying, it remains unchanged. As part of the GoPro savings, we can replace with the Xiaomi Yi, which costs as much as the set of bicycle tires. If you do not believe that you can, then look here - colleague Piotrek makes pictures of our trips for years. To take nice pictures you do not need good equipment!
Here is the entry from the vicinity of Lake Garda. I went there equipped only with Samsung S7, Gopro and the cheapest, sensible drone (Zerotech Dobby). All this summed up, it still cost little more than the Sony RX0. Do the photos crush? No, but they are quite sufficient (although from my point of view they are a bit lacking).
Somewhere in the world there is a Chinese who can do what you do, but cheaper and better.
AND here is the entryfor which I was carrying a mirrorless camera with a replaceable lens on my back. The difference is, but does it matter? Who is currently paying attention to details and quality? Easy access to information means that we will not take any photos, someone has probably done the same, only better. So why ?!
You have to answer this question yourself. If minor differences are important to you, you can read further. If not - buy a GoPro and invest in the phone. It's enough. Seriously - go to wide angles and the camera for details and background is, in my opinion, the best possible option.
For me, unfortunately, the slight difference matters, but it's only through my inner, unjustified need and willingness to do things decently (which, however, come out differently). Obsessions that make me being in the Azores all the time convinced that I will never go back there, so it would be great if I could bring the best souvenirs. Do you come back to photos from the past, even though there are millions of them? If not, I recommend starting a blog - it helps in the selection. Let's go back to the merits:
Sony RX0 is my dream
On paper, the camera has everything I need. It is small, waterproof, shockproof, allows you to take pictures both on a full auto and burial in settings. It has a screen, a pair of buttons, WiFi, built-in input on the tripod and the optimal shape, which does not hook anything and does not push the pocket unnecessarily. Even in jeans he can do it. For this is devilishly fast, really. I've never had anything that takes pictures so fast.
Two, physical, well-felt buttons. I press one, the webcam is ready to work in about half a second, I press (or as they say: I am overcalling) the second, it gets the second (well ... not quite what's going to happen next). I press faster, more is done. Eventually! I am able to take a photo 2 times faster than in the case of GoPro and 4 times faster than the phone (counting with removal from the pocket). On a bike, when things happen quickly and the views change every now and then, it's important. This is what I've been waiting for. Two physical buttons at the top, responsible for switching on / off and snapping, make it never so fast and comfortable to take pictures - even in spring gloves.
Good direction, only the opposite
It takes me a while to get used to the body of the device. Rectangular symmetry means that I do not always aim it in the right direction. Getting the right habit associated with placing it in the pocket, always aiming in the same direction, does not last long. I'm not a fan of a centrally located lens, but I understand the designer's motivation - POV will be easier, just like capturing your hand during a selfik. I'm delighted ... until I look at the picture house.
The interior does not count
At first glance, most of the pictures do not look like they have been taken with a camera, the price of which goes back to a decent mirrorless camera with a sensible lens. It turns out that it is not without reason that all sports cameras have a fisheye lens that practically does not need to be targeted. Either way, the photo will cover everything. Not only that, you can straighten it in post-production a little later. The Sony RX0 angle is small, but I knew it from the beginning. The matter is made even more difficult by the fact that while the phone with a huge, modern display can be even framed, nothing is visible on the Sony display.
The eye used to Retina, OLEDs and other inventions is a bit spoiled. The quality of the screen in Sony is to put it mildly - and in combination with the size ... shooting while driving, reminiscent of an attempt to roll up a flapper jacket. It's supposed to be done, but everyone dreams of throwing it out and taking it out of the new pocket when it's needed. It's not that this display is bad, it's just plain. It does not match this nice feeling of having a premium product. In my opinion, framing photos will be an obsolete thing in the very near future. I think that 360 * cameras that take a picture of everything and the view are cut at home are a sure future. With the rest - one of the next entries will be just about the top representative of the genre of such inventions.
From the camera type: advanced compact, with a decent auto mode (because yes, wrongly, I treat this device) you can require that the shooting takes place straight - at least when you want it. This is how it is, but not really. Well, ladies and gentlemen:
THIS CAMERA CAN NOT DO PHOTOS
In a short thought, which would be a great title click-bait, but still. There is no possibility that you pull, turn on, press, take a picture, turn it off, hide it. Pressing the shutter button does not take the picture. But how - you ask. Well, yes. There is no or not found (but rather is not) continuous sharpening mode, it is only single. This means that the trigger should be pressed halfway, wait for the pick-up to catch focus, then press down to take a picture. It's stupid, but I suspect that the creators know it well, and they have blocked some technical nuance. Focus detection works great in Sonym (effectively marks the edges on the display that are sharp), but it does not matter when you are driving. There are several pictures and prayers that are sharp. Sharpening unnecessarily extends the time, but it is still much faster than GoPro or the camera.
But when he does, he'll do it!
Okay, really, everything above does not matter when we can do a photo. Again: I can not process the pictures well, the pictures are compressed and it makes no sense at all, but trust me - their quality is very good. I will not make such photos by phone, period. In all these difficult photographic issues like the tonal range and others that do not come to my mind - it's very good (for an advanced compact of course).
Adding to this the possibility of manual change of many parameters (eg shutter speed - although I do not know if this is said in the photographer's way) to never blur the photo from driving or vice versa, to make a nice night view, we have a device for everything, but a little bit to nothing. In each of the spheres, he wins something and loses something:
The quality of the pictures is much better than GoPro or the phone, but lower than mirrorless
The convenience of use is higher than anything else (in the context of point & shot handling), but proper framing and focusing is heavier
The price is the sum of GoPro and a good phone.
Will I replace my equipment?
Well, here's the problem. I love Sony RX0, but I do not know. Mate Maciek (the one from the series Kolary, from which I borrowed it) stated that people from Sony were probably drunk. Maybe they wanted to go crazy, do something that does not seem to make sense. Something more interesting than the next incarnation of close perfection Sony RX100 (which I also used, effects are eg in entries from Tenerife).
I can not imagine giving up a sports webcam like GoPro or Xiaomi - this is, in my opinion, the basic equipment of every cyclist amateur photographer. A perfect compliment is the phone, which allows you to better capture the background (in the fish eye, all remote elements seem even smaller, which in the case of trying to capture the vastness of mountains or winding serpentine in the distance, significantly hinders the situation). So maybe instead of the compact, which I happily have on my back? Well, possible - unfortunately not in every situation. I know that fixed lenses (lack of zoom capabilities) have their followers, and thanks to the lack of moving parts are often much more resistant, but that's probably not for me. I like to do a close-up sometimes, which pulls from the horizon of the mountain, making them closer to the cyclist.
I do not know.
If Sony RX0 cost PLN 1500, maybe I would consider buying. It would be irrational, unjustifiable from any point of view and served only to satisfy a whim. But it is not free. You have to spend over 2 times more on it. Before the used copies appear on the market, I suspect that we will have the answers from the competition (they are probably partying). I can not recommend it to anyone with a clear conscience. The need to have this device feels somewhere inside. You look at them and you know you need it. I just had it. I would suffer from lack of zoom, but after a few hours, even the most convenient compact on the back begins to disturb. Sony RX0 is a great complement to the photographic repertoire of an ambitious amateur, but nothing more.
Finally, I would like to remind you that the Sony RX0 is not a camera but a camera. I will venture to say that I use it contrary to the purpose and in this way I am also writing this text. Nobody seems to suggest a device that is just a camera. Maybe it is technically somehow justified (maybe the camera is not different from the camera). I'm not interested in movies. If you want to review Sony as a camera - the internet is full of them. As a camera, this is, in my opinion, one of the first reviews on the internet. Photography slowly #nikogo.
Boy, I want him ... I do not need, but I want to.
This camera is like a cross-country race for 20,000 PLN for an ordinary person. Alone a bit strange, but as a complement to the garage quite nice. Just how to justify it and how many times do you use it?
These things are the best. Thank you Sony for doing something so strange and bold. I respect you (despite hate in the middle of Maciek for the Playmemories application and payment support for additions to the RX100, through which I lost a lot of health)
The moment I write these words, I've been in Majorca for a week. I go here every day with a camera on my back and I regret everyday that there is no RX0 with me ... then I watch pictures and stop regretting. On the one hand, I would certainly go a bit more comfortable, on the other, I would have missed a long end a bit. I still do not know, fortunately the equipment described here is so expensive that I do not have a dilemma for now. I'm going back to play with Garmin Virb 360, about which will be one of the next texts.
