"Hi Maciek, how was your vacation?"<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The question every bikepacker dreads, especially if their name is Maciek. If it's not Maciek\u2014even worse\u2014it means someone got their names mixed up. You hear this question, and ten thousand stories come to mind at once, as if your entire life is flashing before your eyes. Is this how you feel in the last minutes of your life, looking back? Perhaps. I'm frantically searching for the answer, how to summarize in a few words what happened on a trip that subjectively lasted a month, maybe even a quarter. But in reality, it was a little over a week. Because one hour on such a vacation is like a week in normal life. The one with shopping, taking out the trash, and unpacking the dishwasher.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I'm jolted out of my own head by the repetition of the question or the interlocutor's gaze, clearly searching for some trace of Maciek's inner life, which has somehow disappeared. This time, however, I have it much easier. I have two very good answers prepared, after which I can walk from the coffee machine to my desk in peace. Depending on the interlocutor, there are two possibilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 \u2013 Hi Maciek, how was your vacation?
\u2013 I shit myself so badly, I thought I was going to die. My ass almost blew off and I got dehydrated.
\u2013 Oh, that's bad.
- Well, that's bad.

Second:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2013 Hi Maciek, how was your vacation?
\u2013 Very cool: I swam with a shark, lay on the beach, snorkeled on the reef and walked through the jungle.
\u2013 Oh, fucking awesome.
\u2013 Well, fucking awesome.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

By "Indonesia," I mean just a few of the islands highlighted in the image below\u2014or, more precisely, a small, though perhaps quite representative, selection. The islands of Sumbawa and Lombok are radically different from Bali in every respect. This is important, because the country consists of over 17,000 islands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By "Indonesians," I mean the people we met. There were many of them and they were very diverse, but still, their numbers were very small compared to the Indonesian population. Indonesia is the fourth most populous country in the world. Statistically, 4 out of 100 people on Earth are Indonesian.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
