* segment is a road snippet that for some reason is important to someone. It can go up, down, sideways or at an angle, but it should not be interrupted by external factors like lights or crossings. For each segment, a ranking of the best cyclists is created: KOM (King of Mountain) and Koles: QOM (Quenn of Mountain).

If Laurent Fignon knew in 1989 that after driving 3260km, he lost to LeMond at the end of the last 25-kilometer-long Tour de France race by 8 seconds, he could make up for it? Probably not. We, on the other hand, can easily check how much we are losing on the Szczyrk - Salmopol driveway with the best live score. We're going, we're looking at the display behind the bridge and we watch as the trail of the fastest ride leaves us. Depression - we can calmly look around and pretend that we have come to visit. And only the squealing heart rate belt betrays our intentions ...

(Wikipedia edit: LeMond asked his team not to give a split time during ITT, because he planned to go "all-out", he comes out of the fact that loss awareness does not motivate if one goes in the corpse)

Warsaw, the middle of the night. At the traffic lights on Marszawkowska there is Ferrari and Golf. The light changes to green, Golf starts with the screech of tires. [pullquote] You had to be a tracksuit,
have a wife Dagmarę and synka Sebka [/ pullquote] He wins the race for the next lights - in the evening he puts on info that he has toured Ferrari again, it is already the 3rd superauto this week. The lost guy still does not know that they were racing. "But drechol" I think, just like everyone else who saw it. I'm going home quietly on my city bike. A kilometer before the end, my pace increases by half a minute from 20km / h to 40km / h. Viaduct. People are looking at a fool: why a guy who just walked down the sidewalk suddenly pushes his lungs back down his throat. Does the fact that he's been pissed off before Garmin have something to do with it? Sometimes each of us is such a tracksuit, although for a moment. The above analogy is completely stupid and invented, like most things that recently hit the Internet in self-respecting media, but like them, it presents the situation well.

86% of Warsaw cyclists declare that they would sell their family to the Koma on Agrykola *

I remember when Google Glass appeared on the market - we imagined then how beautiful it would be if one day someone integrated them with segments on Stravie: you go and see the start, end and required time, like the predator - especially in combination with Giro Air Attack helmets integrated glass. Then there were inaccurate live segments on the phone, informing in the handset about the time we had achieved - a bit senseless, but moving in the right direction. In Warsaw namalowaliśmy guys from We painted Ride (I missed a paint drop) here and there are white lines indicating the start and end of segments (in the link, instructions on how to paint segment markings on asphalt). Now the time for a technological future and in July, after years of waiting, a segmental revolution has taken place. Together with the new models, and then the upgrade of the older firmware, we got what should have been available for a long time. Strava, however, has accustomed us to the fact that things that are obvious (ANT + support on the phone, navigation and a thousand other functions) are not. For some time I have been checking how it works and due to the lack of comprehensive instructions and information on the net (except for a reliable one dcrainmakera) I thought that I would share secret knowledge with you, because I feel that the subject has somehow gone sideways.

What you need to have and why so terribly much and dearly

1. Garmin with live segment support.

Due to the company's policy, we will not buy older models, so I will limit myself to new ones and those that should be updated in the Garmin Express app:

Garmin 510if you're racing / training, you do not need maps, it's enough to navigate the dash
Garmin 520if you are racing / training, you only need a bit of maps, because there is not enough space to upload a very large area. I omit any magic options like controlling an intelligent simulator, because it is not the subject - but I will come back to it in the near future.
Garmin 810if you need large maps for this, because you remember how the navigation on the dash was working in the 500 model and you will not be able to put in a second time and do not want to connect to the laptop to upload maps before each trip to a new place. For this you like instead of clicking on the physical buttons to click directly on the screen.
Garmin 1000if you want everything you can have and do not mind driving with the chopping board on the steering wheel.

... remembering, of course, that all devices have so many options that 90% of us will not use at least half of them. In general, Garmin seems completely unnecessary to most people, but how can you get it, why not, if it's a nice toy.

I went to shopping Mybike.plbecause I got there the cheapest, almost all drugs are on the Allegro.

Strava Segment Explorer on the iPhone, Segments on Garmin 810, Garmin Connect with the preview of their segments - despite the connection with Strava, it still displays its own. This means that if we want to quickly add a Stravy segment to Garmin, despite the combination of both platforms, we have to do it from the level of its application, not GC.

2. A telephone with Bluetooth and the Internet and possibly a computer with internet

or if you're living in the nineteenth century, it's just a computer with internet and USB. If you do not have a computer or a phone, and you want to buy Garmin, it means that you really care about what you do and I respect it ;-)

3a. * Strava with a free account (as a half-measure)

Personally, I think that the Premium account in Stravie was the most overpaid thing I've ever bought on the internet (and I used to buy an electric pencil sharpener in the shape of Pikachu at aliexpress). Segments have changed this a bit, but I will not invest in it anyway. There is a way to upload sements in the free version using the following pages:

http://gniza.org/segments/index.html#/
(this is the paste from the stravy segment - it starts automatically as a Virtual Partner. It also works on Garmin 500/510/800. Downloaded files are placed in the NewFiles catalog and launched from the device level (as Course). We make sure that VP is enabled for the route and driving. We ignore the information that we are off the route, the "ghost" will start automatically when we enter the segment.)

http://strava-tools.raceshape.com/vpu/
(similar tool, also allows you to convert Stravy segment to VP and fire on older devices, plus it allows you to download some route as a Course, without having a Premium account)

http://www.segmentninja.com
(here we have Garmin segments ready, which makes no sense as the GC segments are free. However, the presentation is MUCH better, supported by photos and allows us to search for segments that are WINDING on a given day ;-) )

This requires a lot of hard work, because you have to process each segment separately, upload it and run it on the device. If someone plans, however, to torture one segment in infinity, such as the famous Agrykola, or drives around one route many times, such as the Copernicus Loop, it can do it. The device will show us how many have been left and what is the current loss until the time we set (KOM, PR, specific person, goal).

3b. Strava with Premium account.

There are several ways to have a premium account. You can buy them or go trial. Below are trial links:
30 days free:
http://promo.strava.com/facebook/
60 days free:
http://promo.strava.com/britishcycling/
90 days free:
https://www.strava.com/try-premium/2015-Garmin-90

We enter the link, we give the credit card number or Paypal, set a reminder in the calendar, to cancel the trial before the end, otherwise the account will extend automatically and the payment has been collected (I know what I say, checked). By default, you can not use consecutive codes after yourself, but you can use 3 months of the trial period, then buy paid for a month, cancel and reuse the test period. You can also try to enter cheats every now and then, hoping to let us pass. There are a lot of ways to avoid spending PLN 20 a month and I suggest checking your own combinations.

4. An account on Garmin Connect.

GC for Stravy is what Google+ for Facebook is. Once you had an account there, you came in, you found nothing, you left. You keep your account because it integrates something with the services you use, but you do not know why exactly. Unfortunately, the segments are needed.

How to grasp it.

1. Go to:
https://connect.garmin.com/modern/#

2. We choose on the dashboard "Use Strava segments" in the Segments widget

3. We go to Stravy to look for an option that should be set in "settings" but instead is hidden in: Dashboard -> My Segments and we turn on "popular segments". In this way, the most popular segments from the place where we drive will be sent to the device. Well, it's cool, but if I travel elsewhere every weekend, and in the week after Warsaw, segments from Warsaw are added to me. I would prefer it to be based on the place where my last training took place or in the application where I currently reside.

4. Our own segments to be sent are marked with a star: from the telephone, computer, from the map, from the traveled route, from one's route, from the search - there are many possibilities. Only that if we go to a new place where neither us nor our friends were, then the job is weak. We have to enter the map to find a segment, select it, show details and mark it in the details. Is it really an option that I mark a piece of the map and all segments are pulling off, or I get a list of segments that I can quickly choose would be so complicated?

That would be it. I do not know if Strava outsource application programming as part of free practices to India, but the segment limit is limited to ... 100. So if we are somewhere else every week, the number of asterisks I clap and overcame is the amount of Mario collected by plumber in all parts his adventures. I do not know if this is due to segment caching when the device starts, problems with synchronization or something else, but this is definitely a problem for me.

5. If we have already paired Garmin with a phone (the Garmin Connect app for a phone + switched on bluetooth in both the phone and Garmin), the magic happens by itself. I do not know when, but when I turn on the device and have a phone connected to the Internet, everything moves on its own. If, after leaving the house, we suddenly change the plan and go 300 km further, which we have not predicted before, segments can be added from the Strava level on the phone (of course, to find it quickly, we have to be smart like Baltazar Sponge, it took some time)

6. All we have to do now is check the direction of the wind, the schedule of accelerated buses and we can move to take the KOMs.

3 words about KOMACH, or a short digression

get KOM or die tryin '

 DSC06211

Several times a week I read how it is in Warsaw "we break friends, family, aunt, grandma", how we laugh at others, that they go with a backpack or that they run, that we burn, press, crush, do not look around, do not visit, we go through Sunday loop instead of Honolulu and in general what the road is the same evil. And people believe it. We know that the overgrowth of ambition is everywhere and there will always be a guy who will all break up during an integration ride to Szarlotka in Warka, and then he will write that everyone is weak (true story), or he will turn two people along the way to make it easier. But all this is not true, and the loudest about "Spalarze" they are shouting to you who I never see on common routes. I mean, of course, there are days when we break off: Ośka, Babka, Absolute, We Ride Tempo, but then no one has a grudge against anyone. Being offended is an honor, because it means that there is still a long way to go, and the company with which we travel is strong. The beginnings of my serious driving are the weeks when I almost never traveled with the group to the end. And it was good, motivating. Similarly with KOMs, we still treat it as fun, and the loudest one is that it is the fight for life and death that is shouted by those who are not in the stadiums, and know cycling from the internet.

Especially that in the conditions of Warsaw, KOM is the question of the group with which one goes, or shorter ones than Agrykol, it is largely luck with the accuracy of the GPS, because if the time of the climb is 40 seconds, and the jump of accuracy can sometimes be several meters, then where meaning, where logic.

Now you're king of the mountain, but it's all garbage!

WARNING WE SAVE THE SYSTEM (but then I fix it): There are websites on the internet (I will not provide addresses), which in a few seconds can modify our traces from GPS. The tracka is being played, it sets how much the percentage should be accelerated and won. So-called digital assistance (digital EPO). Stravy's security sometimes captures it, sometimes it does not. What can you do about it? Exceptionally I will use the picture borrowed from http://www.scarletfire.co.uk/because I do not want to throw such activities from my account. We are zooming in on the speed graph and looking for "blocks" on it, if they are flagging the activity with the appropriate description. It should disappear fairly quickly. Appropriate level of approximation can even indicate accelerated activity by a minimal step: 1%.

How it's working?

In short: it works well. The longer the segment the better. I am two weeks by the sea - in Słupsk. There are not many segments here, times are not VERY so I can check how the correcting of the best results works repeatedly. On the hills, on straights, on descents. I suspect that in Warsaw, after all segments have been saved in my housing estate, Garmin would not stop pumping. After all, everybody has to take a route "me to work", "to shop for buns", "driveway under the curb", "long straight along the path", "sprint next to a yellow car in the parking lot" and then duplicate it with the name "driveway" to the curb of Maciek ", or notice that at the 15th kilometer of the 20-kilometer driveway, we lost strength and created a new one with the name" epic driveway - the first 15 kilometers ". Accuracy depends to a large extent on the GPS signal - weather, GLONASS receiver support, etc. It is therefore difficult to rely on the second display while driving. The pointer could momentarily jump between "10s behind" and "2 seconds ahead".

So in short it looks like this:

1. You are driving about 100 meters before Garmin screams that there is a segment in the area. To make it easier to show the map how to get there and how much to start.

2. The segment starts, the word GO is displayed and information about how much we lack for PR * and how much remains to the end (information configurable in the menu). In addition, the moving arrow symbolizes the journey to which we compare, so we have a full view of the situation. And cool, but what do I care about my best time. From the child, everyone says that one should be equal to the best. We can change the default time to compare, but it should be done per segment, so it's too laborious to do for me. I saw in options

 * light simplification: Garmin shows us the time to: our goal, if we do not have it to: the person we follow, which has a shorter time, but the nearest to ours, if it is not there: our PR, if we go there for the first time it's : KOM / QOM. Simple true?

3. After the end of the segment, time and profit / loss are displayed. At any time, we can view the results table for the segment and the surpass profile.

While driving, we can look at a map showing all segments in the area that we have previously marked. This is a cool solution if we want to play "collect all of them". The dot means start, square - end.

ATTENTION: The trace calculation algorithm is different for Garmin and Stravy. It may turn out that despite indicating the device, according to which we made the best time, Strava will cut us a second or three - similarly in the other direction.

Toughed by eye (whatever it is)

I belong to people who, having two metal balls, can lose one and the other spoil it, so there is a good chance that such unpleasantness will not happen to any of you. During the use of Garmin, I managed to kill him several times, sometimes even died during the ride. I'm not even talking about the 1000 model, which just after its premiere was as reliable as our former prime minister, and about 810 in the latest version. 500 failed me only once, and only partially. One of the two that we used on that day did not manage the 610-kilometer track, but still managed to save the entire route covered by the day. I know that these are devices that load the route, maps, segments during startup, connect to HR stripe, cadence sensor, power and speed, phone, follow live, download weather information etc. etc. but the basis is RELIABILITY and freezing the device is not allowed.

An effective, universal way to repair, found after looking at half of the internet? Switch off using the Power button (about 10-20 seconds), then holding Lap and Power connect to the PC - this way you will start the mass storage mode and you will be able to rip and delete the faulty record (usually it is the last route).

Garmin is not the first company that introduces live segments to its device. It is also not the only company that produces advanced meters, or rather training computers. Among the sensible competitors, for example, Mio emerged with the Cyclo model, which I hope to check one day.
