Kaszebe Round 2018
I know, it was not supposed to be this year. IN last year's relationship I wrote that the party is very cool, but one visit to her is enough for happiness. I admit honestly, it was close to my declaration that it worked. With the records, we delayed until the last moment, because I think that Kaszebe Runda only makes sense when the weather is nice - at least for me. Driving 200 kilometers in rain and cold makes for a medium pleasure. Especially when a man every now and then makes a short break for food, during which he will be able to cool down and warm up a bit, just to return in a moment to the rain. I apologize for doubting the weather, which is always good on this day.
Today's pain is tomorrow's success
For the rally or marathon (it's hard to find the correct description of what Kaszebe Runda is, but probably the closest to her for trips in the style of the Rally Around the Tatras), we have been preparing very long and very seriously.
Carefully written by me training plan, based on experience with years of milk and honey flowing, assumed among others:
1. A properly defined diet, aimed at maximally stretching the stomach
2. Exercises of the mandibular muscles that will bite will have to countless amounts of food
3. Strengthening the throat so that undrinkable pieces flying at the speed of light do not damage the esophagus
4. Lifting the dumbbell to keep the plates filled in bold, cycling hands
5. Work on FTP to move with amazing speed between the buffets and overtake people hunting for my scrambled eggs
6. All-year getting up to work before 7 o'clock in order to set up in the leading rows (groups start every 2 minutes for ~ 15 people). We know from experience that there is a limited amount of ice cream on the 3rd from the end of the buffet.
7. Maintaining social relations with people who will create our group - hungry and fast
8. Increased elasticity of the cheeks and analysis of hamster films
9. Abandoning social relations. When colleagues throughout the year invite you to a diet salad with lactose-free sheik and a gluten-free roll, you refuse, because you have to practice eating donuts
10. Purchase properly for large clothes
11. Purchase of a medical package to control the level of sugar and cholesterol.
12. Planning purchases only on Saturday afternoons, falling out on a non-commercial Sunday, to prepare mentally for queues for food
13. Abandonment of all kinds of jellies, gels and bars sponsored by volunteers for distribution in exchange for an entry about the best distributors for local biscotti, such as in the store at Marta's.
This race is purely a racing race, as shown in the pictures:
A heavy plan, but perfect
Panda did not withstand this rigor of training. On the day of the trip, her health problems were completely spread out, her stomach did not withstand this pressure. She spent the day as planned, but a bit too early. It was only on Monday, after returning from Kaszebe Runda, we were supposed to look like this. I had a bit more luck - I spent the preceding days on a little high-mountain training camp in Innsbruck. An expensive hotel, paid by one of the cycling companies, allowed me to polish the last gaps and practice elements that I can not practice in my home. In expensive hotels, the food does not end - lunches can be put on endlessly, and the remaining meals are a Swedish table - the same as for Kaszebe Runda. Meals in the middle of the day focused on increasing the flexibility of the gastrointestinal tract, and breakfasts and lunches are typical building of a food tower on the plate (in order to transfer as much as possible with the smallest number of courses) and approaching food dishes in such a way that together he looked like another person and he did not throw himself into the eyes, as the one who is still making himself. The style has to be kept.
The preparations went perfectly - the starting weight was achieved. In a week I managed to achieve results that after entering any "intelligent weight" would result in a message: "please recalibrate the device". I was ready as never before.
The plan was simple, because I have a very good connection on Kaszebe. I'm leaving Innsbruck on a Friday evening, I'm changing in Frankfurt ... and the chapel. It turns out that because of Friday's storms many of Lufthansa's flights have been delayed - including mine. As I was the only passenger traveling in this way, the plane to Warsaw did not wait for me, I was stuck in the airport ...
The hunger for success
And it was very good. As part of the compensation I got some access to a special consolation wagon, which contained endless chocolate bars (as soon as they started to end, another trolley appeared), airport food voucher and free buffet meals at the hotel where I was temporarily located - Sheraton. Meals for unfortunate passengers at Sheraton are slightly different from those for full-fledged customers. It is not even about the fact that they are not in a restaurant, but in a special room, located a bit out of the way, but the fact that their quality resembles some help for flood victims.
It does not matter, however, training is training - the preparation cycle has been extended by just one day. On Saturday I get on a plane, I take Uberk home, I feel sorry for Panda, that he has to lie in bed for the weekend, repack the backpack, get in the car and collect Peter on the way, hit straight to ... Burger King. Then there is Kościerzyna and a classic path wiped by over 2 thousand cyclists and cyclists - a competition office and a food visit to Biedronka. Our metabolism is so wound up that we can not afford a shortage of hand food.
Just do your job
Then another visit in Biedronka, because there is something sweet yet and you can go to our agritourism located in the middle of nothing (the most characteristic point in the area is an asphalt road located some 800 meters from us) to sit in a barbecue. And only this wall of rain throughout the day and not too optimistic forecasts worry a bit. As it turned out later, Kaszebe Runda always keeps the weather level, and despite 100% certainty that we will get wet, the route ends in the scorching sun.
Yes, I can say: this year we were damn well prepared for Kaszebe Round and nothing could stop us. The plan was made, the conclusions were drawn, everything was "on the plus side" - with the calorific balance above all. We do not eat anything at night. It's hard, but when you go to sleep after 5pm and get up after 5, it's possible. Our digestive systems are set to burn hundreds of calories in an hour, so we wake up with a huge sucking in the stomach and a buffet motivation.
It does not quite work out and forcing us to complete the first breakfast at 6.20. Fortunately, after 7 we are already hungry again and we are waiting impatiently for the start. I admit honestly, that day I am afraid of my stomach myself - in the background I only pray that my navel should be sealed and I have not sucked on my shirt. The organizer even provided special aprons-bibs that guard the belly so that it does not explode. The loop on the side allows you to control the state of the perimeter of the body, but we know well that as long as the thigh does not hit the stomach while pedaling, you can calmly fight on. In the worst case, we have too multitoolsthat will move the cockpit slightly higher.
You can read about the event last year's entry. Nothing has changed, except that after last year's storms trees are less. It is still one of the few events at the beginning of which folders, horizontal bicycles, marketers, trekkids, vintage bikes and the latest technological inventions armed with ENVE components compete next to each other. A gentleman with a tummy in which he would fit three rendered riders standing next to him. A lady in shorts and a T-shirt starting for 200km with tires the size of my biceps (probably about 2.5 inches) next to a triathlete in a tank on a professional goat. That day we are all riders. Almost 2,300 people taking part in three distances. Many of them will travel such a long distance for the first time in their life.
Here, I come back to my theory that Kaszebe Runda is one of the best places for the first-ever attempts to cross the barrier of 100 or 200 kilometers. So well protected, considering its length, the searchlight routes look anywhere. Over 200 kilometers (because three distances run on partially different loops) it was impossible to find an intersecting crossroads or an unmarked bend or hole.
With holes it can be different, like in Kashubia - sometimes better, sometimes worse. It starts on average. The beginnings of the route are good, but full of asphalt. Each of the street craters is painted over with green fluo-paint, but you know how it is in the peloton - it will be enough for one person to miss the front and it is certain that someone in the back will die (or at least his wheel). This is the moment in which we decide to always go ahead and impose a pace than to drive. The roads are OK until a person moves around a small group, it allows a light slalom, but quite efficiently, move forward.
What we meet later is pure poetry. You remember the text about the best part of the best route in Warsaw, for which I wrote recently? This is the same ... only a lot longer and better, because the forest is like a better, more green one. It is known that others are always better. In addition, these lakes on the sides. The road is perfectly even, wavy, a lot of corners, as well as obscenely long straights. The best thing about it is, however, that there is practically no movement on it. This is one of those roads, where the car probably travels a dozen or so people - residents of the few villages that are in the area.
The closer to Kościerzyna, the worse it is with the culmination somewhere at the height of Bytów, when the asphalt becomes rugged and not very pleasant. After 150km, it can be a bit tormenting and irritating. Just like last year, it seems to me that the longer the distance, the more nice places it covers. Maybe this is an incentive to move your borders in the next years? On the other hand, it seems to me that bikes of people choosing 65km forgive much more.
I will mark this one more time: Kaszebe Runda is the best opportunity to drive by Kashubia, which you have. Kashubian roads are silent assassins. They are winding, with unprecedented difficulties, surrounded by trees, and the traffic, although small, generates lokalsi, who are known for quite a joyful road culture. If a man knows the way by heart, he can go faster - a problem if a cyclist appears in a place where he never was, and a car appears in the front, which should not be there, because the traffic is small. This is probably one of the reasons why more and more bicycle paths are appearing in the area - cool paths, but definitely not for road cyclists.
Focus on serious things, not on road safety. Buffets, like roads, are also different. Some (the final ones when the routes connect) are so crowded that we probably would cross the time limit trying to get food. Some (just like last year) allow you to feel like the worst canteen, which in the perspective of time and for unknown reasons, is mentioned very well. Pasta with a substitute of some mushroom flavored addition. Some, however, are flavored poetry. What to call a table on which they stand next to each other (more precisely they do, and do not stand) - pancakes, scrambled eggs, sandwiches with a lard, pickled cucumbers, fish and cakes?
You think that Tatra Road Race is fighting with yourself? Pfffff.
Imagine that you interrupted the ride for a while, waiting for you with 150km of very fast driving. You see a smoked fish in front of you, a sweet cake and a sandwich with lard. You must choose. Inadvertently, before you have made your choice, it turns out that you have already eaten a piece of fish and biscuits (or a few, it's hard to say) and you find that you were tempted to try this wonderful lard with a lard that might be good, maybe a bit disappointing.
He looks at you, and knowing that maybe one of her colleagues will eat it and say at the finish line, that it was delicious, it will be like feeling when you went to Stelvio from the wrong side and someone makes you aware only after returning. This sandwich will remind you all the way, many things in life are difficult to forget, but lard during the hardest effort. You can not stand it, grab it and put your teeth into bread. Lard is so fat that after the first bite you regret. You regret, but you bite on, because you can not stop. You finish the whole sandwich and exclaim:
Non, je ne regrette rien!
Now you can look at your colleagues who have been let out of fear with real contempt. Let them regret it. You did it. Sorrow will come only on Monday, when you have to set up a half-hour simulated meeting at work, so that no one disturbs you while you are playing the game on the phone in the bathroom.
On this day, the three of us (with many other people changing behind us) travel a 199 kilometer route in 6 hours and 20 minutes. It's interesting because the time for the right ride is 5:33 - where has the whole hour gone? ;-) I took the ride a bit experimentally - in 2 weeks I am waiting for one of the most difficult starts in the season, and maybe even in my life. It should take just 6-7 hours. Kaszebe Round allowed me to assess what heart rate to aim and how much I can eat during exercise before I find that it is too much.
After that, it's only 4.5 hours in the car with a break for a visit to Burger King and you can easily eat the dinner you have been waiting for a few days (yogurt with jam, peanut butter and nuts and raisins).
Will I return to Kaszebe Runda next year? Well, it's hard for me to say - I was twice, it seems to me that I do not need a third one anymore. The answer to this question, however, resembles the answer to the question of your girlfriend / boy: "will you eat the last fries"? You answer that you probably do not, but you know well that this decision will be a very long time. So I have a strange feeling that despite the 400 kilometers that separate me from the start, we will see each other in Kościerzyna more than once. To eat, to go on a nice route, sit in a place a bit away from everyday hustle and bustle and to meet in a stress-free atmosphere with friends that I have not seen for a long time.
